Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) presents with insulin deficiency results in raised blood sugars. Metals are the inorganic elements present in very small amounts in the living tissues and play an important role at cellular level and hence are important for life. Macro metals like Magnesium (Mg) are present in large quantity and hence are called as macro nutrients.
Aim: To evaluate the correlation of metal ions in Type I and Type II DM.
Materials and Methods: It was a prospective study, carried out at Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, JNMC, Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha, Maharashtra, India from January 2017 to January 2019. Total 260 patients were enrolled in the study. The participants were divided in two groups, diabetic and nondiabetic, based on blood sugar levels. The blood samples were analysed for Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorous and Iron. The comparison was done using studentâ€™s t-test.
Results: The mean values of Iron (Fe) were 162.17±13.27 Âµg/dL, Calcium (Ca) 8.21±0.34 mg/dL, Mg 1.49±0.07 mEq/L, and Phosphorous (P) 2.92.±0.49 mg/dL for the whole study population. The various metal levels when compared with the levels of fasting and post prandial blood sugar in Non-diabetic group and Diabetic group the difference was statistically significant for Fe, Ca and P and was not significant for Mg.
Conclusion: Fe levels were raised and Ca, Mg and P were depleted in patient suffering from DM.
